Stories That Call to Be Told

Natasha Lee shares insights on creative courage and storytelling through photobooks

Last week, I attended a book launch at Ike’s Bookstore in Durban that reminded me why stories matter — and why I do what I do.

The Event

The book, The Invisible Boy from Bramble Way, is written by Anwar McKay, the husband of my favourite South African comedian, Marc Lottering.

It tells the story of a boy growing up in a coloured community, exploring identity, belonging, and the quiet trauma of feeling unseen. It’s funny, heartfelt, and deeply human.

Anwar said something that stayed with me — “the book wanted to be written.” That line struck me deeply.

It echoed a thought from Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act:

“If you have an idea you’re excited about and don’t bring it to life, it might find its voice through someone else — because its time has come.”

Reflection

Anwar shared how the seed for his book was planted during COVID and how he chose to step into discomfort and write daily for nine months. His honesty — and his mother’s fierce love — gave his story such depth.

He also encouraged others, especially people of colour and those who’ve ever felt invisible, to write their stories so the next generation can learn from voices like their own.

One line that touched me most: “My religion is kindness.” Simple. Profound. Grounded in humanity.

Why It Resonated

Listening to him made me reflect on how every creative act — whether writing, painting, or designing a photo book — begins with listening to that quiet call within us. Some stories truly want to be told.

That’s what I love most about my work: helping people give voice to their own stories before they fade.
Whether through photos, albums, or photobooks, we’re all storytellers at heart, and every memory deserves its place on the page.
