FAQ SCANNING
I am very excited to offer a high-quality scanning service – I love it when old photos are digitized and added into your digital photo collection.
It is so important to preserve your photos from loss, decay, neglect and destruction. Once they are digital, it becomes so much easier to share them, all family members are able to get their own copy and you can print photobooks filled with your stories.
The camera scanning method used by the PHOTO MANAGER is fast, high resolution and flexible enough to scan anything from prints to slides and negatives. It is a great method to capture 3D scrapbook pages with embellishments, and difficult to remove photos stuck in albums.
WHAT IS THE CHARGE TO GET STARTED?
There’s no deposit to get started. You will send the items to me via courier. I scan them and send an invoice when the project is complete, this includes a return courier fee.
HOW CAN I CALCULATE A BASIC COST?
The scanning cost is based on the number of photos – so they will need to be counted. In order to get an idea be sure to count them before sending them to us. I only count the number of scans at the end of the project – each photo gets a unique numbered file name as it gets scanned.
DO I GET THE PHOTOS BACK?
It’s up to you! On the PROJECT FORM, you’ll indicate if you want me to return the original items in addition to the digital files, or if you would like me to recycle them.
HOW DO YOU DELIVER THE DIGITAL FILES?
The digital files are returned on a flash drive – one is included with each scanning project (minimum number of scans apply) If you’d like additional flash drives (maybe one for every sibling, for example) I charge the cost of the drive. I can also electronically transfer your photos if you prefer.
HOW ARE THE DIGITAL FILES ORGANIZED?
I create a digital folder structure that matches your physical organisation. For example, if your photos are organised into envelopes labeled by year, events or people, I will create digital folders that match those – so each envelope will become its own digital folder.
No organisation is required for this project- many clients just send a box of photos!- but any organising you have, I will match digitally. If the photos are loose they are named numerically.
WHAT IS THE RESOLUTION AND END RESULT OF MY SCANNED PHOTOS?
I generally scan photos at around 500-600 DPI -this allows flexibility and freedom when printing. They will be in jpg format which is a universally recognized file format – TIFFs and PDFs can also be requested.
The images will be colour corrected (contrast, saturation and if possible red-eye correction) and will often appear very different to the original print.
WHAT IF MY PHOTOS ARE TORN, DAMAGED OR STUCK IN AN ALBUM AND CAN’T BE REMOVED?
Fortunately there is no automation when it comes to camera scanning, each photo is carefully individually handled – although there is a chance of further damage, I will take great care to prevent that. This is quite a manual process, so I charge an hourly-based extra fee, but nothing will be done and charged without communicating with you first. Sometimes photos get stuck to the protective film, or can not be removed without further damage – it is generally best to leave the album intact although this can cost a little more to courier because it is bulkier.
HOW SHOULD I HANDLE PHOTOS?
Try not to put fingerprints all over the photos (these will show up on the scan); rather, handle them on the edges and as little as possible and try to remove excess dust.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
It depends on the quantity that needs to be scanned but usually within 2 weeks. If you have a specific deadline in mind, please make contact with me to discuss the possibility of being able to meet it.
HOW SHOULD I COURIER THE ITEMS SO THEY DON’T GET DAMAGED?
Once you have submitted the PROJECT FORM, I will send you packaging suggestions and a postal address.
I’M A BIT NERVOUS TO COURIER MY PRECIOUS ITEMS…
Generally the courier services are relatively reliable, but it’s understandable to be nervous, I recommend sending items to me in smaller batches. You don’t need to put everything in one box, at the same time!
CAN I INCLUDE VIDEOS + PHOTOS IN THE SAME BOX?
Yes you can! I’ll digitize prints, negatives, slides, VHS Tapes, camcorder tapes, CDs and DVDs… you can send me all of it!
